New is Coming.

Most people fear uncertainty, change, the unknown. Not me. Over the past few weeks I’ve been in total peace knowing God will take care of me and my family, working everything out just as it should be. And He was faithful of course, providing just what we needed, not in abundance, but all we needed. And now, now that there is more certainty and I know I have a pretty decent job that has the potential to offer us much more, now I feel worried.

My entire life has been full of failure and let-downs, not living up to whatever it is I’ve taken on. Even though I know the skills and talents I have been given I fear that same failure. How is it that I can take rest during the hardest times, and worry when things are looking up? Perhaps there’s the knowledge that I now must step up to the challenge and play the game, something that’s been a long time coming I suppose, but something I’m not too familiar with.

"God, stay close and be my guide and strength. You carry us through the hard times; now walk me through the good."

Job starts Monday.

Well, I reckon there’ll be no more AOL jokes from me.

I start my training on Monday, learning what to (and not to) say to people over the phone. This is gonna be a breeze.

AIM Revives the Messenger Battle

I can’t believe I’m actually using something other than Trillian to IM today. Nothing compares to the features and flexibility. It connects to everything, the appearance is customizable, plug-ins extend its features endlessly, the list goes on and on. However, AOL has released Triton and things may be heading back in their direction. While Triton doesn’t match-up with MSN and Yahoo in the themes arena (AOL still uses ‘expressions’ and those are just silly at times), it has a sleek new interface, an amazing radio using XM satellite built-in, and of course video and audio chat (I’ve not tested these features yet – no one’s available). But my favorite feature so far is one that many may be annoyed by, a bundled service. A bundled service is what almost every company is doing now to beef up services, 2 companies partner and include each others products with their own: Adobe Acrobat and Yahoo search bar, Google and Sun, etc… AIM has partnered with Plaxo, a company I’d heard of but never taken a moment to really look into. Plaxo works with your current contact list by maintaining a database on their website that is automatically updated with you and your friend’s info. It’s ingenious, simple, and it works – I’ve already had friends update their info that was severely outdated (I was even reminded my mom’s birthday is today thanks to her adding her info!).

For those that currently use AIM, head to AIM’s website and get the new version, then post back and let everyone know what you think!

Does Jesus Call Us to Shop ‘Til We Drop?

While thinking about what I wanted to say regarding today (Black Friday 2005), I received this article from HomeWord (a great daily devotional resource.) It really said most of what I was trying to say, so I wanted to share it with you.

Does Jesus Call Us to "Shop ‘Til We Drop"?
This devotional was written by Jim Liebelt

Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will be also. — Matthew 6:21 (NLT)

All things being equal, I’m glad to be a Christian, living in America. Many of us, myself included, have been blessed with the material prosperity that is common to average Americans. Today, the day after Thanksgiving Day, marks the official start to another holiday shopping season. Many of us will venture out to local malls, fighting the crowds to get the best deals as we work through our Christmas shopping lists. Yet, I am troubled by the notion that somehow our material prosperity is directly related to our relationship with Jesus.

Some time ago, I read a newspaper article that referred to the opening of a new mall in this way:

“… a pastor was so moved by the retail magnificence around, that he quoted Scripture, ‘Jesus said, I came that you may have life and have that life abundantly… and what do you suppose abundance means? This, of course!’”

Does the abundant life really mean that Jesus came to help us focus on our ability to shop ‘til we drop? I don’t think so! Try telling that to the millions of fellow brothers and sisters in Christ around the world who will regard themselves blessed if they are able to eat a meal today.

Jesus did come to give us life to the full, but the abundant life He was referring to is spiritual in nature.   It’s a life where God infuses us with His Spirit, molds us into the image of Christ and overflows to others who observe and can be influenced and blessed. (See Matthew 5:16, 2 Corinthians 2:14-15; 9:12)

God is good.

So today, while I was still sleeping, Kari got a call from my dad asking her to come down to his office. When she arrived there were several boxes of food there! While we’ve been worrying about what’s next for us, God’s been moving in people’s lives that we don’t even know. A woman that works with my dad told her church about what happened, and they held a food drive just for us. An entire turkey and everything else we would need to have Thanksgiving was handed right to us.

No matter what’s going on, God is always faithful.

Back in Oklahoma.

First off, I actually got back on Sunday night, so don’t be mislead into thinking I’ve been gone until now.

Nashville is a pretty darn cool town. Traffic sucks, but that’s to be expected in a large city I suppose.

I really don’t have a lot to say. I am trying to set up an interview at AOL (it’s the 3rd step in the hiring process and I’ve already finished the first 2) and hope to have that taken care of by end of week. MediaShout is still a possibility but I can’t wait around to see if anything develops – I need a job.

Josh and I went to Wal-Mart last night to get him an Xbox 360 but they were already sold-out. Surprise! I can’t believe some fools were waiting since 6 last night to buy one at 7 this morning. We wanted to throw eggs at them, but we decided not to. If you want one so freaking bad just pre-order it!

I reckon that’s all I got.

Good Ole Music

It’s amazing how music contains such memories.

I’ve spent the last few days enhancing my music collection, and am reliving some grand old times with the "We are the World" gang, U2, Queen, The Jackson 5, and MJ’s solo material. It’s all such good stuff!

I leave tomorrow at 6 AM for Nashville and hopefully a highly profitable employ.

A post for Matthew.

For those that don’t read the comments left for posts, you missed Matthew’s response to the Google for cell phones post. And for those that don’t know Matthew, this post is for and about him.

Matthew is my bro-in-law, though we leave off the "in-law’ part most of the time, who’s  in the US ARMY over in iRAQ (his spelling) with the "Mountain Medics" of CO Springs. It appears he is able to access the web more than we thought he would, and I am thankful for that as he would go crazy otherwise. In his comment, he said he hopes someone is reading this, and Matthew, there are over 150 unique visitors to the blog every week, so people read you!

We are praying and thinking about you, and hoping you have found some good guys to hang-out with. It’s good to hear you will finally pay off that laptop, though I don’t know what the ARMY would do with a tricked out laptop had they taken it from you. Don’t forget to send me a list of movies you want, I’ll hook you up proper!

If anyone has any words for Matthew (even if you may not know him) feel free to leave a comment so he knows people are reading :)

Another wasted day…

Yesterday was pretty worthless.

I had to go downtown to get a copy of the police report to fax to the insurance company because they’re not doing jack about my wreck. Thankfully the line at the police station wasn’t very long and only took a few minutes, plus the report was free. After I got the report I went by AOL to see of they had gotten my resume… apparently when you apply for AOL on-line at the Time Warner job site it doesn’t send it in like you think it would. So they directed me to their website for job applicants and I filled everything out yesterday. I also went to Express, where I worked for several years, to update my info… again I had to come home and do it on-line. Today I’m going back to AOL and Express now that I’ve finished all the app stuff and we’ll see what happens.

Last night I took Gracie to McDonald’s. Here’s a really bad video of her playing.

I fell like today will be a double-post day as I have some explaining to do about upcoming jobs.

Time to get rolling.

I didn’t realize how many people actually read the site until yesterday… I guess I need to keep it better updated.

I had a great conversation with Chris Blake yesterday about the Emerging Church. For those unfamiliar with the Emergent movement, you can read a bit more about it here.  After reflecting upon that conversation that could well explain some of the conflict both Josh and I had with First church. We desire to reach out to those not knowing Christ in relevance and authenticity, breaking tradition where necessary, and embracing it when led to. These changes are reflected in the youth ministry Josh and I created (Josh was more successful in integrating these concepts into the Mid-High worship, I feel) but were never considered in regards to the main church. The thing about churches is that for the main part of man’s life on earth, religion has dictated how that life is lived. It wasn’t until several hundred years ago that man left religion and began to depend upon himself (self-deification if you will). With this process, the influence of the church began to wane, while intellectualism began to rise to power. In modern thinking, the churches response was to battle alongside with reason and intellect. However, applying those practices to post-modern thinking don’t have the same results. Today’s generations, while still intellects, look more at the results and the emotions than the facts. And for the most part, the church hasn’t adapted.

The integration of the arts, life-stories, and freedom to worship spontaneously as the spirit leads are of the utmost importance in effectively reaching this new generation for Christ. Tell them all you want, but if you don’t show them you’re wasting your time. The pre-tense that all is fine is a thin veil easily seen through. Authenticity requires that veil be ripped away so the truth of pain, struggle, and imperfection are seen by non-believers. When people see we as Christians have the same struggles as everyone else, you are then able to relate and begin an honest dialogue.
